Civil Service Exam Modes: COMEX or PPT?

Learn about the factors to consider when choosing between the two civil service exam modes: Computerized Exam and Paper-and-Pen Test.

To help you with your CSE Prep, we offer a variety of free study materials to get you started. We also have an Online CSE Review Course that is applicable to both the Civil Service Exam Professional and Subprofessional Levels, which will be available soon.

Should you take the Computerized Exam or the Paper-and-Pen Test? Some people have a difficult time deciding which of the civil service exam modes to take. This is actually a matter of skill and preference because the coverage and passing rate for both modes are exactly the same. To help you decide, here are two questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you have good computer skills?
  • Do you prefer to read from a computer screen or a printed test booklet?

Civil Service Exam Modes: Computerized Exam

Civil Service Exam Modes

If you have good computer skills, you may opt to take the Computerized Exam, also known as the CSE-COMEX. Computer familiarity is essential if you are choosing this mode because the exam is conducted on the computer. You must be comfortable with the use of technology; otherwise, the Computerized Exam could cause anxiety and affect your test performance.

The Civil Service Commission usually provides several dates to choose from. The applicants must register at https://services.csc.gov.ph and pick an exam schedule. The registration fee is PHP680.

Civil Service Exam Modes: Paper-and-Pen Test

If you are not that tech savvy, you may opt for the traditional Paper-and-Pen Test, also known as the CSE-PPT. Some people are intimidated by technology and are not comfortable using computers. Others feel more in control with a printed test booklet as they can flip the pages and revisit the questions easily. If having a printed document in front of you helps you concentrate better, then the Paper-and-Pen Test is the right mode for you.

The Civil Service Commission regularly releases an exam advisory for the test schedule and requirements. There are specified testing centers from Regions I to XII, NCR, CAR, CARAGA, and BARMM. The registration fee is PHP500.
