Common Types of Vocabulary Questions

Vocabulary Words are part of the coverage of the Professional and Subprofessional Levels of the Civil Service Exam. There are three possible types of questions regarding this:

Synonyms

For this type of question, you need to determine the word or phrase that has the same meaning as the given word or phrase.

Example: Find the synonym of the given word in capital letters.
executive CLEMENCY
(1) authority
(2) mercy
(3) admiration
(4) advocacy
(5) hierarchy

The correct answer is Choice (2) mercy.

Antonyms

For this type of question, you need to determine the word or phrase that has the opposite meaning as the given word or phrase.

Example: Find the antonym of the given word in capital letters.
ABOLISH the law
(1) discard
(2) politicize
(3) segregate
(4) create
(5) implement

The correct answer is Choice (4) create.

Words or Phrases Used in Sentences

For this type of question, a word or phrase is used in a sentence, and you will be required to determine its synonym.

Example: Find the synonym of the given word in capital letters.
The evening news featured a video of the witness VEHEMENTLY denying that he was involved in the crime.
(1) unemotionally
(2) conciliatory
(3) assertively
(4) figuratively
(5) revelry

The correct answer is Choice (3) assertively.
